Fixed rates lock your interest rate for the entire fixing period (typically 10-25 years). Your monthly payment never changes, providing complete peace of mind — but you pay a premium for this stability.
Variable rates (floating) change with market conditions, usually tied to Euribor. They start lower but can increase significantly if rates rise. Many Luxembourg banks offer hybrid products: fixed for 5-10 years, then variable.
Which is better in Luxembourg? With the ECB's recent rate cycle, fixed rates have become the dominant choice. However, if you expect rates to fall, a variable or shorter fixing period may save you money. Luxembourg's strong banking sector offers flexibility most other markets lack.
